UCLA Martial Arts Program

I have managed the UCLA Martial Arts Program since early 2009 which has come leaps and bounds during my time with UCLA Recreation. My philosophy is based around creating a program that can produce world class martial arts competitors, instructors and artists. I work on developing a family based community of martial artists which is currently led by the Martial Arts Leadership Team. This program is designed to provide specific training to students who wish to enrich their lives with martial arts, whether through teaching professionally, running a school or just making martial arts a part of their life forever. Students learn from some of the top martial artists in California and the World, not only physical training in martial arts but pedagogy, leadership, team building and more.
Another initiative I have developed since being at UCLA is the Bruin Self Defense program. UCLA students can go to Free Self Defense classes every week during the quarter and learn not only martial arts techniques but education on awareness, stress response, psychology of violence and much more. As part of the Martial Arts Leadership Team students can also join the Self Defense Instructor Training program to learn how to become a UCLA Self Defense Instructor.
Being a part of the UCLA Martial Arts Program has allowed me to become involved in the world of martial arts at such an important level. Not only being able to provide students with quality instruction, but exposing them to a diverse array of arts that is only possible in a melting pot population that Los Angeles provides. Through networking with various martial artists from around the city I have been able to bring in top names like Kenny Johnson, Jean Jacques Machado and Nicolas Saignac. With over 20 classes available in 15 different martial arts styles, UCLA is well on its way to becoming the largest and most diverse martial arts program in the country. None of this could have been possible without the superb instructors, dedicated students and executive management of UCLA Recreation. The programs success is due to not only great martial arts, but open mindedness in programming and management, and of course the great energy provided by our customers...UCLA students.
I look forward to my continuing journey through the wonderful world of martial arts at UCLA and am Thankful to all those who have made my time there an amazing experience.
