Chikara Kickboxing (Satori Martial Arts Academy) - Jez Hall

Picture
The history of Chikara Kickboxing can be traced to the early 80's. The club started off training at the 'Still' pub in Lincoln town center and developed into a thriving business offering a new type of martial art. Chikara martial arts then relocated to Monson Street in Lincoln's high street offering a full time academy enjoying several years as one of the top clubs in the world. The club is now based at Total Fitness just off the A46 by-pass on the outskirts of Lincoln and has now changed its name to SATORI but the roots are deep in Chikara.

I started training with Jez Hall at Chikara Kickboxing around 1998. I was studying Sports Science at North Lincolnshire College, a satellite college of Nottingham Trent University. This was the first martial arts academy contract I signed and I went on the first day with a good friend (Jon Procter). Because I was paying per month for unlimited classes, I very rarely missed (because I was a poor student and did not want to waste my money). The conditioning aspect of their training is what I mainly remember from class. I would contest that as well as more recently with Muay Thai training this was the best shape I have ever been in and I relish the thought of being able to get back to training that hard consistently again.

One vivid memory I have is when Jez asked who would be interested in starting fight training....I of course replied yes and lined up with the rest of the eager students wanting to train to fight. One of the other instructors was the current World cruiser weight kickboxing champion and he proceeded to move down the line and punch us all in the stomach pretty hard. Once he had hit everyone we were told to line up again for the second round....many dropped out to the side not wanting that punishment again...those left in the line braced themselves for another hit, but received a handshake and entry into the prestigious fight training crew. Unfortunately I was not one of them, at 19 being hit as hard as that and anticipating another strike was too much for me, so while I did not join the fight team, I did continue training and moved forward with an important lesson. Other memories include my first foray into knife and knockout point training with a gentleman who guest instructed at the academy.
